The Alaska Volcano Observatory is teaming up with the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) to offer a free Volcanic Crises Awareness
course. It will be held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
Geophysical Institute, on 16-17 February 2012.

This course is targeted for a broad cross section of professionals
involved in emergency management, fire services, hazardous material
personnel, planners, public utilities, public health, private business
and municipal services. It will provide participants with an
understanding of the complex factors that influence volcanic crises; the
hazards, vulnerabilities, impacts, and risks; and the tools and
processes that support monitoring, forecasts, warnings, preparedness,
mitigation, and response. This course enhances the abilities of
participants to support their organizations' preparedness and response
efforts for future volcanic crises. It provides an understanding of the
processes, impacts, and causes of volcanic hazards; current monitoring
and hazard assessment tools and products; volcano warning and
dissemination systems and methods; and community response to eruptions
and volcanic crises. Participants will come to understand how
organizational preparedness and community-level planning support
mitigation of volcanic hazards.

Modules that will be covered include:

- Hazards and impacts;
- The pulse of the volcano;
- Case studies of crisis events;
- Awareness and preparedness; and
- Eruption scenario.

The Geophysical Institute is located on the University of Alaska
Fairbanks campus at 903 Koyukuk Drive in Fairbanks Alaska. Instruction
