NEW PROJECT TO MANAGE NSF ARCTIC DATA
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has teamed with the
University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and the National
Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to manage the diverse data needs
of the arctic research community that is supported by the National
Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs (OPP) Division of
Arctic Sciences (ARC).

The Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service (CADIS), developed
by NCAR, NSIDC and UCAR and funded by NSF, has provided data management
for the Arctic Observing Network (AON) for nearly four years. The
follow-on NSF-funded Advanced CADIS system (A-CADIS) is being designed
to serve data needs of the broader arctic community, including, but not
limited, to projects funded by OPP under AON, Arctic System Sciences
(ARCSS), Arctic Natural Sciences (ANS), and the Arctic Social Sciences
Program (ASSP). A-CADIS will allow scientists to easily access, share,
integrate, and work with data spanning multiple disciplines, thereby
enabling scientific discovery. A-CADIS will provide data ingest and
access services to scientists, decision-makers, and other stakeholders,
as well as archival services to ensure data accessibility through the
coming years and decades. NSF has recently mandated that investigators
develop a viable management plan for data collected or generated by
their projects. By accepting metadata and data collected by arctic
investigators, A-CADIS will facilitate the development of data
management plans for their projects.

The CADIS site will provide more information soon on continuing and new
capabilities, as this award has just been funded; please see:
http://www.aoncadis.org. In the meantime, please contact the Principal
Investigators, Mark Serreze (serreze [at] nsidc.org) or James Moore
(jmoore [at] ucar.edu) with any questions.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE: PROJECT MANAGER AND DATA CURATOR
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), part of the Cooperative
Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the
University of Colorado at Boulder, seeks a Project Manager and a Data
Curator for the new Advanced Cooperative Arctic Data and Information
Service (A-CADIS). A-CADIS will manage arctic science data collected
under NSF support. Both positions will be in Boulder, Colorado.

The Project Manager will coordinate efforts between NSIDC, the UCAR
Earth Observing Lab, NCAR Computing and Information Systems Lab (CISL),
and Unidata to provide full life cycle support with data ingest, access,
preservation, and stewardship services. Cyberinfrastructure will build
from CISL and NSIDC systems demonstrating close interconnection between
these and external systems and integration of NSF data with other arctic
data types.

The Data Curator works with all A-CADIS partners to define and implement
data flow and preservation and is responsible for optimizing data set
value according to defined levels of service.

information on how to apply for these positions, please see
