The National Hydrology Research Center of Environment Canada seeks a
postdoctoral fellow in cold regions hydrological modelling to test and
develop a hydrologic model to consider and minimize hazards and
environmental impacts of oil and gas pipelines in key northern
environments, including the Inuvik, Northwest Territories (NWT) and
Whitehorse, Yukon areas. The position is located in Saskatoon, Canada.
The starting date is 1 September 2011 or earlier.

The research project will focus on testing and improving a physically
based hydrologic model in order to improve the ability to predict
discharge from river basins, with an emphasis on extreme events, snow
cover distribution, soil freezing and melting over spatially
heterogeneous terrain, and the effect of future climate change scenarios
on hydrology.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the required
database to drive the model; testing the hydrologic model for Trail
Valley and Havikpak Creeks near Inuvik, NWT; analyzing the resulting
model output, with emphasis on extreme events; modifying, in
consultation with the model developer, the model as needed; and
participate in the writing of reports and papers stemming from this
research project.

Candidates must have a PhD in hydrology with experience in physically
based modelling; analyzing large data sets; cold regions hydrological
processes such as permafrost, snow accumulation and melt; writing
scientific papers; and presenting results at scientific meetings.
Excellent coding skills and interpersonal skills are essential.
Experience with datasets from atmospheric models such as re-analysis is
preferred.

The position is available for one year, with possible extension.

2. The Centre for Earth Observation Science Seeks
   Two Research Associates
   Climate Forcing of Sea Ice and Teleconnections to
   More Temperate Regions
   University of Manitoba, Canada

The Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) Faculty of Environment,
Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba seeks candidates for
two full-time Research Associate (RA) positions. The research positions
will focus on climate forcing of sea ice and teleconnections to more
temperate parts of the planet. The positions are located in Manitoba,
Canada.

The RA positions will become part of collaborative team of over 150
investigators, working with the Canada Research Chair, the Canada
Excellent Research Chair program, and ArcticNet, a Network of Centres of
Excellence.

CEOS arctic research facilities include capital infrastructure for sea
ice, meteorological, and oceanographic measurements; ocean and
atmospheric observatories; access to the WestGrid supercomputing
infrastructure; access to state-of-the-art remote sensing instrumentation;
and field programs in Arctic Canada, Greenland, and northern Europe.

The faculty seeks candidates with backgrounds in atmospheric science,
physical oceanography, climatology, physical geography, or related
fields. The successful candidates will have a proven publication track
record and completion of a PhD (in exceptional circumstances a masters
level may be considered). All qualified candidates are encouraged to
