  1. Workshop Announcement
Overcoming Barriers to Arctic Ocean Scientific Drilling: The Site
    Survey Challenge
    1-3 November 2011
    Copenhagen, Denmark

A workshop entitled "Overcoming Barriers to Arctic Ocean Scientific
Drilling: The Site Survey Challenge" will be held 1-3 November 2011 in
Copenhagen, Denmark. The workshop is co-chaired by N. Mikkelsen, R.
Stein, and B. Coakley.

The Arctic Ocean is the last essentially un-drilled, un-sampled ocean
basin. Arctic deep-sea drilling is the only means to acquire
paleo-oceanographic and climatic records, and constrain the tectonic
history of the basin. Among other issues, the lack of adequate site
survey data and appropriate age models for these data hampers the
development of mature drilling proposals. The focus of the workshop is
to plan site survey campaigns based on existing and planned proposals
and pre-proposals that were developed as a result of the successful 2008
Magellan workshop, "Arctic Ocean History: From Speculation to Reality."

The 2011 workshop is open for all interested scientists, including site
survey specialists, PIs for existing and planned Arctic Ocean drilling
proposals, ship operations people, and United Nations law of the sea
specialists. The number of participants is limited to 60 persons
including students and young scientists. Partial reimbursement and
financial support will be available for students and young scientists
and for a number of other invited participants.

A 'Registration of Interest' form is available at:

Registration of interest deadline: Monday, 1 August 2011.

  1. Conference Announcement
3rd International Glacial Archaeology Symposium: Frozen Pasts
    3-8 June 2012
    Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

Organizers of the 3rd International Glacial Archaeology Symposium:
Frozen Pasts, announce a call for papers. The conference will be held
3-8 June 2012 in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

Following the success of the two previous symposiums in Berne,
Switzerland in 2008 and Trondheim, Norway in 2010, the 2012 conference
will highlight the discoveries of North American glacial archaeologists
and showcase the opening of a major new Yukon First Nation Cultural
Centre featuring ice patch discoveries. The 3rd International Glacial
Archaeology Conference will be hosted by Kwanlin Dun First Nation and
the Government of Yukon.

Researchers and participants in glacial archaeology studies are invited
to submit proposals for session topics, papers, and posters. The
complete call for papers is available at:
