The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP) will host a
webinar entitled "What We Know About Walrus and Sea Ice: The Sea Ice for
Walrus Outlook" on Tuesday, 24 May 2011 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. AKDT. The
webinar will be presented by Gary Hufford from the National Weather
Service, Alaska Region.

The Sea Ice for Walrus Outlook (SIWO) contains weather forecast and sea
ice information for northern Bering Sea and Bering Strait subsistence
communities. The Outlook is updated weekly with information on sea ice
conditions and weather relevant to the walrus. SIWO includes: an
assessment of current ice conditions using up-to-date satellite imagery;
a 10-day outlook of wind conditions; written observations of ice
conditions from Alaska Native hunters; and comments from sea ice experts
and other contributors.

SIWO is an activity of the SEARCH Sea Ice Outlook. The SIWO
collaboration includes weather and ice forecasters, climate scientists
and sea-ice researchers at NOAA, the National Weather Service, the
University of Alaska, and the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S.
(ARCUS, with funding from the National Science Foundation's Division of
Arctic Sciences). SIWO is available through internet and Facebook sites.

The ACCAP webinar will discuss what we have learned about walrus
distribution and habitat from a blend of western science and traditional
knowledge, how this information provides the foundation for creating
SIWO, and how you can contribute to the outlook. Preregistration for the
webinar is strongly encouraged. To register, please fill out the form
available at: http://ine.uaf.edu/accap/teleconference.htm#register, or
contact Brook Gamble (accap [at] uaf.edu or 907-474-7812).

Gary Hufford will be presenting remotely, however, Fairbanks viewers are
still welcome to attend the presentation at the ACCAP office, which is
located at 3352 College Road on the second floor of the Denali Building.
Satellite viewing locations for local community members, agencies and
nonprofits, resource managers, and scientists to participate in monthly
webinars include the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, Bristol Bay Campus
in Dillingham, AOOS office in Anchorage, Islands and Oceans Center in
Homer, Kuskokwim Campus in Bethel, Northwest Campus in Nome, and the NWC
Learning Center in Unalakleet. Not all sites are available to host every
month. Please contact ACCAP for room details and let us know if your
organization would like to host a satellite viewing site.
