  1. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeks Aquatic Ecologist
    Fairbanks, Alaska

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is recruiting for a full-time,
permanent Aquatic Ecologist (GS-408-11/12) to design and implement
studies of freshwater and marine resources for the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge. The position will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will be responsible for inventory and
monitoring of aquatic ecosystem components, including flora, fauna, and
physical processes. This position will report to the Arctic Refuge's
Supervisory Ecologist and the National Wildlife Refuge System's
Inventory and Monitoring Program.

Candidates should have the desire to work in spectacular, remote areas
under challenging environmental conditions, and be skilled communicators
with demonstrated leadership qualities. A strong background in aquatic
ecology is required, as is demonstrated ability to:

- Identify information needs for aquatic-resources management;
- Implement appropriate and scientifically sound studies; and
- Prepare reports and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific
literature.

The 19.3-million acre Arctic Refuge is located north of the Arctic
Circle in northeastern Alaska. Within refuge boundaries there are 7.2
million acres of federally designated wilderness; the highest mountains
of the Brooks Range; 18 major, free-flowing rivers (including 3
designated wild rivers); and numerous streams, lakes, wetlands,
estuaries, and coastal lagoons. The refuge provides unparalleled
opportunities for studying ecological processes and trends in intact,
naturally functioning arctic and subarctic ecosystems.

  1. Multiple Positions Available
    Glaciology
Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones

The Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones (Centro de Estudios
Avanzados en Zonas Aridas, CEAZA) seeks to fill four openings. All four
positions are available immediately, and will be based in La Serena,
Chile.

Professional Glaciologist
CEAZA seeks a professional glaciologist with a scientific background in
glaciology, geography, geomatics, or a related discipline to join the
glaciological research group. The research is focused on determining the
water resources from glaciers and snow in the Andes of the Norte Chico
Region. The work involves a significant amount of fieldwork during
summer months, and data analysis and reporting writing activities during
winter months.

Field Glaciologist
CEAZA seeks a field glaciologist with mountaineering experience and a
scientific or engineering background to join the glaciological group.
The research is focused on determining the water resources from glaciers
and snow in the Andes of the Norte Chico Region. The work involves a
significant amount of fieldwork during summer months, and data analysis
and reporting writing activities during winter months.

Two Postdoctoral Positions
CEAZA seeks two postdoctoral researchers, one with skills and experience
in glaciology or hydrology, and the other with skills and experience in
glaciology or meterology, to join the glaciological group.

Both positions will focus on evaluating and monitoring water resources
from the cryosphere in the arid Andes of north-central Chile. The
research consists of work spanning a broad range of cryospheric science,
including snow cover and albedo mapping, and glaciological, energy
balance, and permafrost studies, the results of which CEAZA seeks to
understand in the context of their climatological controls and their
role in regional hydrological resources.

  1. Two Postdoctoral Fellowships Available
Georges Lemaitre Center for Earth and Climate Research
    Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

The Georges Lemaitre Center for Earth and Climate Research at the
Universite Catholique de Louvain invites applications for two
postdoctoral fellowships. Both positions are initially for 24 months,
and will be based in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

One fellowship is on understanding the causes of the increase in
Antarctic sea ice extent over the last decades, using observations and
model results. Model results will come from existing simulations
performed with the ocean-sea-ice model NEMO-LIM. As a first step,
analysis will be performed on those available simulations in order to
determine which are the most likely hypothesis to explain the recent
changes in Antarctic ice extent. In a second step, those hypotheses will
be tested in sensitivity experiments using the models available in the
group, in particular the model NEMO-LIM.

The other fellowship is on the role of sea ice in the air-ice-ocean
carbon dioxide exchanges in the Southern Ocean. In this project, the aim
is to understand CO2 fluxes through sea ice and their implications for
the regional upper ocean CO2 budget in the polar oceans, finally
evaluating the consequences at large scale. Model results will be
compared to observation time series to identify the key processes
driving the seasonality of CO2. Then, the impact of sea ice on the
regional CO2 budget from the pycnocline to the atmosphere will be
estimated.

Suitable candidates will possess a PhD in climatology, oceanography,
atmospheric science, or a related discipline. An expertise in climate
modeling would be appreciated. Applications should include a detailed
curriculum vitae, a letter describing relevant experience and research
interests, and two letters of recommendation.

The position is expected to start 1 October 2011 but can be discussed.
Applications should be sent to Hugues Goose (hugues.goosse [at] uclouvain.be)
or Martin Vancoppenolle (Martin.Vancoppenolle [at] uclouvain.be) via email,
or alternately at:

Georges Lemaitre Center for Earth and Climate Research
Earth and Life Institute
2, chemin du Cyclotron
B-1348 Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

Application review begins: Wednesday, 15 June 2011.
The position is open until filled.
