The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Council of
Managers of National Antarctic Programmes (COMNAP) seek applicants for
six early career fellowships available to researchers, engineers and
other professionals in the Arctic and Antarctic during 2011-2012.

SCAR announces opportunity for four fellowships in 2011. These
fellowships are designed to strengthen international capacity and
cooperation in Antarctic research by encouraging early career scientists
and engineers to undertake Antarctic research at an institute in one of
the 36 SCAR member countries.

Supported research topics in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean include:

- Antarctica in the global climate system;
- Antarctic climate evolution;
- Evolution and biodiversity in the Antarctic; and
- Astronomy and astrophysics from Antarctica.

Applicants must be PhD students or have completed a PhD no earlier than
five years prior to the deadline for applications. The work must be
carried out in a research group of a SCAR nation different from that of
the applicant's origin and current position.

Additionally, COMNAP announces opportunity for two fellowships. These
fellowships are designed to develop and promote best practice in
managing support for scientific research in Antarctica, and will allow
researchers from a COMNAP member country to undertake short-term visits
to major international laboratories, field facilities, and institutions
operated by other COMNAP members.

Proposed research programs should contribute to the objectives of the
host institution. Research topics may include engineering, social
sciences, humanities, education, communication and outreach, and
medicine.

Application deadline for both fellowship programs: Sunday, 15 May 2011.
