  1. Conference Announcement
    7th Annual Polar Technology Conference
    24-25 March 2011
    Albuquerque, New Mexico

Organizers announce that the 7th annual Polar Technology Conference will
be held 24-25 March 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference will
provide a forum to exchange information on research system operational
needs and technology solutions for polar environments.

Hosted by the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS)
Program for Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere
(PASSCAL), the conference is open to polar scientists and technology
developers from academia, state and federal agencies, non-governmental
organizations, and the private sector. The conference agenda will
include oral presentations, a poster session, tutorial workshops on
specific technologies (e.g., power systems, iridium), and informal
opportunities for networking and information exchange.

Research systems range in scale from autonomous data collection towers
to large-scale research stations in polar field conditions. Presenters
are encouraged to discuss intra- and inter- national cooperation for
site deployment and maintenance. Presentations in all technology fields
are welcome. Conference organizers invite participants to present on
topics including:

- Polar research system requirements;
- Proven research systems and approaches for polar deployment; and
- Hardware and software solutions related to weather stations,
robotics, power systems, telemetry, and remote communications.

To register for the conference, please go to:
http://polartechnologyconference.org/register.html. The $100 fee will
cover conference expenses, coffee breaks, and lunch for both days.
Lodging is available at a reduced rate through Wednesday, 3 March 2011.

  1. Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
    Reconsidering the Coastal Community in the 21st Century
    14-17 September 2011
    Anchorage, Alaska

Organizers of a session entitled "Reconsidering the Coastal Community in
the 21st Century" announce a call for abstracts. The session will be
convened at the 27th Lowell Wakefield International Fisheries Symposium,
"Fishing People of the North: Cultures, Economies, and Management
Responding to Change," to be held 14-17 September 2011 in Anchorage,
Alaska.

The session will address issues related to the vulnerability of coastal
communities where single sector economies are impacted by short and
long-term resource and market instabilities such as increasingly
restricted access to fisheries and the rising cost of living in northern
rural areas.

The session will include a panel, which will explore the concept of
"community" across the coastal north. Topics of discussion will include
how residents adapt to socioeconomic and environmental change, and
sustain or reject coastal livelihoods, as well as the range of methods
residents use in adjusting to changing political and economic realities.
By exploring new approaches to diversification, cooperation, and
conflict mitigation this session will discuss innovative strategies that
might contribute to community viability.

Organizers encourage abstract submissions from scholars working on
coastal issues in northern areas or other regions with similar issues
for cross-cultural discussion. To submit an abstract, please complete
the form available online, at:
http://seagrant.uaf.edu/conferences/2011/wakefield-people/abstract.php.

Abstract submission deadline: Monday, 4 April 2011.

    Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

Organizers announce the 6th Antarctic Meteorological Observational,
Modeling, and Forecasting Workshop to be held 22-24 June 2011 in Hobart,
Tasmania, Australia. This workshop offers an international forum for
sharing current research and operational logistical support in the field
of Antarctic meteorology and weather forecasting.

Key themes for the workshop are:

- International Automated Weather Stations (AWS) networks;
- Antarctic weather observations;
- Antarctic numerical weather prediction, modeling, and forecasting;
and
- Antarctic meteorological research.
