  1. 2011 Summer Undergraduate Internships
    September 2011 Graduate Studies
    Arctic Atmospheric Science
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) in Arctic
Atmospheric Science announces the availability of approximately one
dozen summer internships.

The six-year project takes advantage of the unique capabilities of the
Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL), which is run
by the Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC)
and located at Eureka, Nunavut in the High Arctic. The goal of the
program is to significantly enhance the educational opportunities
available to young researchers interested in polar, atmospheric, and
climate sciences, enabling them to build collaborations and networks,
and to develop scientific, technical, communications, and organizational
skills.

Partial stipend support is available for the internships, which provide
the opportunity for undergraduate students to undertake research in
arctic atmospheric science. Internship details and application
instructions are available online, at:
http://www.candac.ca/create/CREATE_summer_intern_poster.pdf.

Application deadline: Monday, 28 February 2011.

The CREATE program is also recruiting students for Graduate Studies
beginning in September 2011. Students interested in pursuing a graduate
degree involving arctic atmospheric science are invited to contact the
CREATE Investigator with whom they wish to study. Information about the
program, supervisors, and application procedures can be found at:
http://www.candac.ca/create/CREATE_graduate_studies_poster.pdf.

Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

  1. University of Michigan seeks Research Assitants
    Aquatic Ecology
    Northern Alaska

The University of Michigan seeks undergraduates or recent college
graduates interested in ecological research in remote Alaska during
summer 2011. The positions run from 5 June - 25 August and will be based
in northern Alaska.

Both paid jobs and paid research fellowships are available. The
fellowships are for 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates and are through the
NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Both positions
offer an excellent opportunity to gain research experience in ecology
and meet outstanding research scientists from around the world. Research
assistants will work closely with a group of scientists on projects from
microbial ecology to the linkage of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
via the movement of carbon and nitrogen. The broad goals of the projects
are to understand the dynamics of ecosystem function in soils, streams,
and lakes, and how tundra ecosystems will respond to climate change.
Fieldwork will be conducted at the Toolik Lake Long Term Ecological
Research (LTER) site, located in the foothills of the Brooks Range in
northern Alaska.

Experience in ecology, chemistry, and microbiology is desirable.
Interested applicants should provide a resume and a one-page description
of their background (include courses and field experience), goals, and
names of references to George Kling (gwk [at] umich.edu).

Application deadline: Monday, 7 March 2011.

  1. Colorado State University seeks Seasonal Archaeologists
Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands
    Fairbanks or Delta Junction, Alaska

Colorado State University (CSU) seeks seasonal archaeologists for the
summer 2011 field season. The positions are in support of the U.S. Army
Alaska Cultural Resources Program, and will be assigned to either Fort
Wainwright, Fairbanks, Alaska; or Fort Wainwright Donnelly Training
Area, Delta Junction, Alaska.

Under the direction of Installation Archaeologists, the successful
candidates will conduct archaeological fieldwork, including monitoring,
survey, testing, and data recovery. Work will focus on completing
archaeological surveys of proposed project areas and may include the
evaluation of sites for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
eligibility. The positions will run approximately 3-6 months, starting
late May or early June 2011. Crews typically work four 10-hour days each
week. If necessary, time after August may be scheduled based on weather
conditions.

Applicants to Crew Leader positions must have a BA/BS in Anthropology or
Archaeology, including completion of archaeological field school.
Graduate work in Archaeology is preferred.

Applicants to Crew Member positions must have completed their junior
year in an Anthropology degree program with emphasis in archaeology or
completion of archaeological field school. Preferred applicants will
have knowledge of North American, arctic or sub-arctic archaeology;
previous Alaskan experience; and/or previous archaeological field
experience.

All applicants must be in very good physical condition; be able to walk
long distances in adverse terrain and weather conditions, carrying all
necessary supplies and equipment; and be able to camp in remote areas if
needed. Applicants must be extremely flexible; be able to work well with
others; and posses a positive attitude. U.S. citizenship is required.

Travel expenses to Alaska will not be paid. No housing or per diem will
be provided at either assignment location. Applicants are responsible
for securing housing and arriving daily at assigned installation.
Transportation will be provided to individual work sites. Per diem and
camping will be provided if projects require remote camping.

Applications may be emailed, faxed, or mailed. Application packets must
include a cover letter indicating preferred work location; a resume; a
copy of college transcripts; and the name and daytime phone number for
three references including one current or former supervisor. Transcripts
do not need to be official, sealed, or sent from the college. All
application materials must be received by 15 April 2011. Incomplete
applications cannot be considered. Qualified applicants may be contacted
after the closing date to schedule an interview. Do not send any
materials to CSU; please submit all application materials to the
