  1. Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
State and Fate of Sea Ice and Legal and Policy Consequences on the
    Global Community
    Arctic Science Summit Week
    27 March - 1 April 2011
    Seoul, Korea

Organizers of a session entitled "State and Fate of Sea Ice and Legal
and Policy Consequences on the Global Community" announce a call for
abstracts. The session will be convened at the Arctic Science Summit
Week (ASSW), 27 March - 1 April 2011 in Seoul, Korea.

The Arctic Ocean is undergoing profound change with tremendous economic,
social, and environmental consequences. While this is often exemplified
by the marked reduction in arctic sea ice cover during the last few
decades, there are contemporaneous changes that include the thinning of
ice sheets, degradation of permafrost, and alteration of atmospheric and
oceanic circulation patterns, which all impact the ecosystems,
infrastructure, and resource base of communities that exist in arctic
regions. As a consequence of these changes, we are also faced with new
opportunities and challenges in the Arctic. The opening of the Northern
Sea Route and increased access to resources may create economic benefits
but it will also potentially exacerbate land and ocean use conflicts.

This session is designed to explore the legal and policy consequences
that are associated with the projected reductions in arctic sea ice, and
to begin considering the use of science as a tool of diplomacy that
promotes international cooperation in the Arctic, independent of
political, economic, or cultural perspectives.

Submission deadline: Monday, 31 January 2011.

  1. Conference Announcement
Climate Changes in Polar and Subpolar Regions
    17-19 May 2011
    Moscow, Russia

Organizers announce that an international conference entitled "Climate
Changes in Polar and Subpolar Regions" will be held 17-19 May 2011 in
Moscow, Russia at the A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of
the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The conference topics cover all aspects of climate changes in polar and
sub-polar regions including climate feedbacks and links to atmospheric
teleconnection patterns; oceanic processes and atmosphere-ocean-sea ice
interaction; cryospheric changes and atmosphere-land-cryosphere
interaction; impact of atmospheric composition on climate; and modeling
of climate variability and change.
