    Fourth Interagency Conference on Research in the Watersheds

Organizers of the Fourth Interagency Conference on Research in the
Watersheds announce a call for abstracts. The conference will be
convened 26-30 September 2011 at the Westmark Hotel in Fairbanks,
Alaska.

Watersheds face resource impacts driven by accelerated change related to
land use, population, and climate. The Fourth Interagency Conference on
Research in the Watersheds will view watershed science with a
continental perspective including pressing issues of watershed science
and management in Alaska. The purpose of the conference is to better
understand the processes driving change and help managers incorporate
societal needs and scientific uncertainty in the management of natural
resources.

Attendees are invited to present their personal and professional
experience with watershed research, management, and user perspectives
during the conference. Abstracts for presentations or posters are
invited on the following topics, or other topics that attendees may wish
to suggest, related to pristine or altered watersheds:

- Observing Watersheds: Instrumentation, remote sensing, data
management, observed trends.
- Studying Watersheds: Research, analysis, and interpretation of
data; causes and effects; experimental approaches; cumulative
effects; relationships; predictions; models. Drivers of change can
include climate, land use, growth in population and water demand,
wildfire, disease, insects, agriculture, mining, and energy
development. Impacted goods and services include quantity and
quality of water, biota, and habitats; controls on carbon, nutrient,
and sediment fluxes; aesthetics; and opportunities for education and
recreation.
- Managing Watersheds for Change: Approaches to adaptive management,
incorporation of uncertainty in decision-making, prioritization of
management actions. Collaborative approaches. Ecosystem restoration
and strategies for adaptation, mitigation, and enhancement of
resiliency.

Abstract submission deadline: Friday, 18 February 2011.

    Interdisciplinary Climate Change Research Symposium

Organizers announce that the application deadline for the
Interdisciplinary Climate Change Research Symposium has been extended
to Monday, 7 March 2011. This symposium is for early-career climate
change researchers, and is hosted by Dissertations Initiative for the
Advancement of Climate Change Research (DISCCRS). It will be convened
22-29 October 2011 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This symposium will provide 30 invited DISCCRS Scholars the opportunity
to present research, hone interdisciplinary communication and
teambuilding skills, discuss emerging research and trends, and talk
about societal and professional challenges involved in climate change
research with established researchers invited to serve as mentors.
Participation is limited to 30 early-career PhD scholars. Airfare and
on-site expenses are supported through grants from NSF and NASA.

Applicants must have completed their PhD requirements between 1 April
2008 and 28 February 2011. The selection committee will favor applicants
who plan to engage in interdisciplinary research careers in any subject
relevant to the study of climate change, its impacts, or its solutions.
The emphasis is on the U.S. research system; applicants from all
countries who are interested in learning about the U.S. research system
or connecting with U.S. researchers are welcome to apply.

    Climate Change and Health Pan-Arctic Results

Organizers announce the Pan-Arctic Results Workshop of the Climate
Change and Health Adaptation in Northern First Nations and Inuit
Communities Program. It will be held 8-10 February 2011 in Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada.

From 2008 through 2011, Health Canada funded 37 projects throughout the
Canadian North that allowed community researchers to monitor, discuss,
develop, and participate in the process of adaptation and the health
implications of a changing climate. The workshop will bring project
representatives together with experts and policy makers for the first
time to discuss their experiences, share their findings, and strategize
for the future. Moreover, the workshop will be held in conjunction with
the Canadian Society for Circumpolar Health annual meeting that will
bring leading scholars, professionals, practitioners, and community
advocates from across Canada to Ottawa to share their expertise and
knowledge.
