  1. University of Manitoba seeks 3 Tenure-Track Assistant Professors
    Arctic System Science
    Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

As part of the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) program, the
University of Manitoba and the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of
Environment, Earth, and Resources invite applications for three
full-time tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor.
The position will be based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

The positions encompass the broad field of Arctic System Science with a
particular emphasis on how sea ice relates to the areas of
geomicrobiology; low temperature isotope systematics; biogeochemistry;
physical, chemical, and biological oceanography; and physical and
chemical modeling of contemporary arctic processes. The successful
candidates must have a strong background in one or more of these areas,
experience in working within a team approach to science, and arctic
research experience. Applicants must have completed their PhD, and/or
have postdoctoral experience, by the time of their appointment.
Candidates must have a strong commitment to research and teaching in
their specialization.

Successful applicants will be expected to develop a research program
complementary to, and in support of, Arctic Geomicrobiology and Climate
Change. The successful candidates will become members of the Center for
Earth Observation Science (CEOS: http://www.umanitoba.ca/ceos/), and
will hold appointments in the Department of Environment and Geography or
Geological Sciences as appropriate to their expertise. The successful
candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
in their respective expertise in geoscience, geography, and environment
programs as appropriate. The appointments will commence 1 July 2011, or
as soon thereafter as may be mutually agreed.

Applications should include a complete curriculum vitae, a statement of
research interests, a sample of 3-5 publications, a description of
teaching philosophy, and names of three referees with contact
information. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however,
Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Completed
application packages must be sent by Monday, 31 January 2011 to Norman
M. Halden via email (nm_halden [at] umanitoba.ca) or in hardcopy:

  1. University of Colorado seeks Research Associate
Arctic Cloud and Boundary Layer Processes
    Boulder, Colorado

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
at the University of Colorado invites applications for a research
associate, postdoctoral scientist to study arctic atmospheric
boundary-layer processes. The position will be based in Boulder,
Colorado.

The successful applicant will pursue research of the processes involved
in the interactions between the clouds, the atmospheric boundary layer,
and the surface in the arctic environment using existing observational
data sets and numerical modeling. The available observational data sets
include ones collected over the arctic sea ice and at coastal sites. The
numerical modeling will involve diagnostics and validation of arctic case
studies, and climate runs of the Weather and Research Forecast (WRF)
Model, run in both mesoscale and LES mode.

Applicants should have a recent PhD in atmospheric science, meteorology,
or a related field. Experience in either numerical modeling, analysis of
lower tropospheric observations, or analysis of arctic data is required.
Exposure to a combination of two or three of these is desirable. The
anticipated start date is between March and June 2011.

  1. University of Massachusetts seek Candidates for PhD Assistantship
    Arctic Water and Carbon Cycles
    Amherst, Massachusetts

The Climate System Research Center (http://www.geo.umass.edu/climate/)
at the University of Massachusetts seeks a PhD student to join a
sponsored project focusing on carbon cycling of the arctic basin
draining the North Eurasian Earth Science Partnership Initiative
(NEESPI) region. The position will be based in Amherst, Massachusetts.

The project will use remote sensing data and a set of linked models that
simulate methane emissions from sources such as lakes and wetlands as
well as other CO2 sources/sinks. The project involves collaboration with
researchers working in hydrology, ecology, and remote sensing at the
University of Massachusetts, the University of Washington, and NASA's
Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

A background in modeling and spatial data analysis is desired. The
research will require strong quantitative and programming (e.g., C,
FORTRAN, Unix/Linux) skills. Interested candidates should email a
description of research interests and recent work, a full curriculum
vitae, and contact information for three references in a single PDF
document to Michael Rawlins (rawlins [at] geo.umass.edu).

Review of applications begins: Tuesday, 15 February 2011.
