    Copenhagen, Denmark

The Arctic Monitoring Assessment Programme (AMAP), the University of
Copenhagen, and the University of Aarhus are organizing a conference
entitled "The Arctic as a Messenger for Global Processes--Climate Change
and Pollution." The conference will be convened 4-6 May 2011 at the
University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The conference will include talks by invited keynote speakers, oral
presentations selected on the basis of submitted abstracts, poster
presentations, and short oral presentations of selected posters. A panel
discussion will develop messages to be communicated to the Arctic
Council Ministerial meeting that will take place in Greenland one week
after the conference.

The topics to be covered at the conference are:

- Climate Change and its Impacts on the Arctic Cryosphere - Past,
Present, and Future
- Pollution of the Arctic - Sources, Pathways, and Effects
- Global and Arctic Systems - Feedback Mechanisms
- Arctic Ecosystems - How Resilient Are They?
- Human Aspects of Climate Change and Pollution
- Science and Policymaking

Abstracts for proposed oral and poster presentations (maximum 750 words)
should be forwarded to the conference organizers at: amap [at] amap.no.
Submissions must be received by Saturday, 15 January 2011. Selection of
oral and poster presentations will take place within one month and

  1. Conference Announcement
International Conference on Arctic Marine Science, International Law
    and Climate Protection
    17-18 March 2011
    Berlin, Germany

The German Federal Foreign Office is hosting the International
Conference on Arctic Marine Science, International Law, and Climate
Protection. The event will take place on the Berlin premises of the
Federal Foreign Office on 17-18 March 2011 in Berlin, Germany.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland is co-hosting the
conference, with additional support from prominent research institutes.
The conference will discuss the legal framework for marine scientific
research in the Arctic Ocean at present and in the future. Scholars,
scientists, and diplomats with an interest in the Arctic Ocean are
invited to attend.

  1. Conference Announcement
NCSE 11th National Conference on Science, Policy, and the Environment
    Wednesday-Friday, 19-21 January 2011
    Washington, D.C.

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) 11th
National Conference on Science, Policy, and the Environment is entitled
"Our Changing Oceans." The conference will be held 19-21 January 2011 at
the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington,
D.C.

"Our Changing Oceans" is divided into eight themes, each of which has
related breakout sessions and symposia:

- Oceans and Carbon
- Coastal Ocean Change and the Potential for Adaptation
- Oceans and Living Marine Ecosystems
- Oceans and Human Health
- Oceans Affect Everyone
- Tipping Points: How likely are they and how could we manage in the
face of such changes?
- White Arctic, Blue Arctic
- Observing and Measuring Ocean Changes for Improved Stewardship

The 'White Arctic, Blue Arctic' theme is particularly relevant to the
arctic community:

The region of most profound climate change is the poles. The ice-covered
Arctic Ocean--the white Arctic--and the region surrounding it are
already changing remarkably and climatologists predict that we may see
an ice-free Arctic Ocean during the summer in a few decades--the blue
Arctic. While climatologists are alarmed by this possibility, others
seek opportunities for use of resources and as a transportation route.

Alaska senators Mark Begich (confirmed) and Lisa Murkowski have been
invited to give keynote addresses. The plenary session within the 'White
Arctic, Blue Arctic' theme is entitled "The Changing Arctic Ocean--The
Bellwether for the Planet" and will be moderated by Andrew Revkin,
former journalist for 'The New York Times.' Featured speakers include
Maria Otero, Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs;
Robert Correll, from the Global Environmental and Technology Foundation;
and Richard Glenn, from the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation.

For further information on the breakout sessions for this theme, or
additional details on the other conference themes, please go to the
conference website: http://communities.earthportal.org/ncseoceans2011/.
Clicking on the 'Conference Sessions by Theme Group' link in the left
sidebar will open up additional selection options, one for each theme.
Clicking on those theme titles will then result in further choices for
each breakout session within a given theme.

Registration for the conference is available online. People interested
in the conference but not able to attend in person have the option of
registering for webcasting, which will be provided for specified keynote
and plenary talks. Details on registration options and rates are
available at:
http://communities.earthportal.org/ncseoceans2011/topics/view/55991/.

  1. Calls for Registration
    Communicating Ocean Science Workshop
    SEANET Annual Meeting Luncheon
    Monday, 17 January 2011
    Anchorage, Alaska

Organizers announce that registration is required for two events that
will be held in conjunction with the Alaska Marine Science Symposium,
scheduled for 17-21 January in Anchorage, Alaska. The Communicating
Ocean Science Workshop and the SEANET Annual Meeting Luncheon both
require preregistration. Register for either or both of these events by
emailing Marilyn Sigman (msigman [at] alaska.edu).

A half-day Communicating Ocean Science Workshop, which kicks off the
Alaska Marine Science Symposium, will be held on Monday, 17 January
2011. This year's workshop features a "how to" session for scientists
interested in doing more effective outreach and education through the
media and in Alaskan coastal communities and rural schools. Nancy Baron
of the Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea (COMPASS) is a
featured speaker on the risks and rewards of science communication.

The Scientists and Educators in Alaska Network (SEANET) Annual Meeting
Luncheon will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, 17 January 2011. The
luncheon will involve planning for the 2012 National Marine Educators
Association conference to be held in Anchorage.

An agenda for the workshop and luncheon schedule is available at:
