The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks
applicants for the position of Research Technician. The opening is for a
duration of two years, and will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful applicant will build an inventory of glaciers in the
National Park Systems of Alaska using manual and automated digitizing
methods, and will assist in analyzing trends in glacier changes.

Candidates must have a minimum of two years experience working with
remote sensing and geographic information systems datasets. Some
experience working with glaciological datasets will be an asset.

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks
applicants with a PhD in geophysics or a related discipline. The
position will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The project involves modeling seasonal variations in continuous GPS data
from southeast Alaska using time variable gravity data from NASA's
Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites. The work
will also involve downscaling of GRACE data using a series of
hydrological models. The applicant should have a good knowledge of the
principles of glaciology, geodesy, and hydrology, as well as experience
working with remote sensing datasets.

  1. University of Idaho seek Candidates for PhD Assistantship
    Climate-fire Linkages in Arctic Tundra Ecosystems
    Moscow, Idaho

A PhD assistantship is available at the University of Idaho to study
climate-fire linkages in arctic tundra ecosystems of North America. The
position is for a duration of four years, and will be based in Moscow,
Idaho.

The position is part of a multi-institution, National Science Foundation
(NSF) funded interdisciplinary research project involving paleo
reconstructions of climate, vegetation, and fire in remote regions of
Alaska; quantifying modern tundra fire regimes in Alaska and Canada and
modeling tundra ecosystems using state-of-the-art ecosystem models.

The successful candidate will develop research that integrates aspects
of paleoecological analyses, quantifying modern climate-vegetation-fire
relationships, and informing ecosystems models to project future tundra
fire regimes. The position will participate in field work in remote
regions of Alaska, including the North Slope, the Noatak National
Preserve, and southwestern Alaska during the summers of 2011 and 2012.

Applicants should have a BS, BA, or MS degree in ecology, biology, earth
sciences, geography, or related field; familiarity with fire ecology,
plant ecology, paleoecology, and/or statistics and modeling; and
research experience including experimental design, field work, and/or
laboratory analyses.

The successful candidate may start as soon as January 2011.
