The Department of Geology and Geophysics at Yale University invites
applications for postdoctoral scientists in Physical Oceanography and
Atmospheric Science.

Physical Oceanography
The successful candidate will pursue research in the field of Arctic
Oceanography, working on aspects of circulation, dynamics, and mixing.
Candidates should have a PhD in physical oceanography (or in a related
field such as applied mathematics or fluid dynamics). Applicants should

Atmospheric Science
The successful candidate will pursue research in the field of
aerosol-cloud-climate interactions and the role of such interactions in
past, current, and future climate. Research tools will be satellite data
and numerical models; experience with such tools will be advantageous.
Candidates should have a PhD in atmospheric science (or a related
field). Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of

  1. The Wilderness Society seeks Postdoctoral Candidate
    Hydrologic Modeling
    Anchorage, Alaska

The Wilderness Society (http://wilderness.org/), a science-based
conservation organization, is seeking a full-time temporary Hydrologic
Modeler to work on simulating current and future watershed dynamics. The
goal is to understand the current hydrology of an important
salmon-bearing stream and how conditions are likely to be altered by
climate change and mine reclamation. Research partners include agency,
NGO, and university scientists.

The position is ideal for a PhD with research experience in hydrologic
modeling of river flow, structure, and temperature although exceptional
candidates with MS plus experience are encouraged to apply. Candidates
should have demonstrated proficiency with modeling, software, and
statistical programs appropriate to research; the desire and ability to
prepare reports and manuscripts for peer-review in a timely manner; an
interest in public land management and climate change issues; and
experience with or a desire to learn about Alaskan/arctic ecosystems.

This is a one-year position with possibility for extension, and is based
in the Anchorage, Alaska office. A complete job description available by

  1. University of Helsinki seeks Postdoctoral Researcher
    Impacts of Climate Change on Arctic Vegetation and Biodiversity
    Helsinki, Finland

The University of Helsinki seeks a talented and highly motivated
Postdoctoral Researcher for a three-year position (2011-2013). The
position will be based in the Department of Geosciences and Geography at
the University of Helsinki in Helsinki, Finland.

The appointee will participate full-time in a project funded by the
Academy of Finland and entitled "Impacts of climate change on arctic
vegetation and biodiversity." This project will:

- Investigate dynamics and the main drivers of recent changes in
arctic vegetation;
- Investigate threats caused by climate change to arctic plant
diversity; and
- Develop projections of the changes in the arctic plant biomass
patterns under future climates.

The project will focus on subarctic and alpine ecosystems of
northernmost Europe and Eurasia. The project has defined key goals, but
there is substantial room for independent and collaborative exploration
of related topics in biogeography, macroecology, remote sensing, and
spatial modeling. The project will require the appointee to carry out
fieldwork in the summer months.

Applicants should:

- Have a PhD with research experience in physical geography,
ecology, or comparable fields;
- Have profound understanding in multivariate data analysis and
spatial modeling;
- Show excellent English writing and speaking skills;
- Have knowledge of arctic/alpine vegetation, remote sensing, and
global change impact modeling; and
- Be motivated to carry out field studies in high-latitude
environments for several days.
