The International Study of Arctic Change (ISAC); in collaboration with
the U.S. Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) program, the
Canadian ArcticNet Network of Centers of Excellence program, and a new
European Union arctic program to be funded in 2011 under the "Ocean of
Tomorrow" call; is holding an open meeting to plan for a forthcoming
workshop on responding to arctic environmental change. The meeting will
be convened Saturday, 12 June 2010 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. CEST in the
Svalbard Room at the IPY-Oslo Science Conference venue (Norway Trade
Fairs).

This planning meeting is the first step in the development of a series
of workshops that will establish the framework for the Responding to
Change component of ISAC. The goal of the meeting is to solicit
information about societally-relevant needs for addressing current and
future impacts of a rapidly changing Arctic. To respond to change in an
effective matter there is a need to prioritize what science is of
immediate societal relevance. To the extent possible it is also
necessary to obtain more precise information on what will be needed in
the near and distant future. Current and planned observing and
understanding activities should be evaluated with respect to meet
societal needs as well as scientific needs, and both the Arctic and the
Globe should be considered.

Participation is open to all interested. In addition to the
environmental science community, the participation of arctic residents
and other stakeholder groups is necessary and welcomed. Those with
expertise in science policy interaction, solving environmental
change-related ecological and societal problems, and conveying
scientific information to a broad public are also invited to attend. One
goal of the planning meeting is to begin to develop capacity and to
widen the community of scholars working on responding to arctic change.
Young scholars are particularly encouraged to participate.

ISAC is an IPY legacy program with support from the Swedish Research
Council, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, the U.S. National
Science Foundation (NSF), and the International Arctic Research Centre
(IARC).
