  1. Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Advisory Committee and Trustee Council
    Upcoming Meetings

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) Advisory Committee and Trustee Council
have three meetings scheduled in the coming month.

The EVOS Advisory Committee will meet telephonically Monday, 19 April
2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. AKDT at the EVOS office. Public
comment is at 10:20 a.m. AKDT. The purpose of the meeting is a summary
of the March National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Scoping meetings,
status of the Integrated Herring Restoration Plan, review of FY 2012
Invitation for Proposals, and status of the 2010 Injured Resources and
Services Update. To participate, please call 800-315-6338 and use code
7224.

The EVOS Council will meet telephonically Friday, 30 April 2010 from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. AKDT at the EVOS office. Public comment is at
10:10 a.m. AKDT. The purpose of the meeting is a summary of the March
NEPA Scoping meetings and Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact
Statement. To participate, please call 800-315-6338 and use code 8205.

The EVOS Trustee Council will meet Friday, 14 May 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. AKDT at the EVOS office. Public comment is at 9:45 a.m. AKDT.
The purpose of the meeting is the Public Advisory Committee Charter,
Habitat, and 2010 Injured Resources and Services Update.

The EVOS office is in Suite 500 at: 441 West 5th Avenue, Anchorage,
Alaska. If you have a disability and need special accommodations to
participate, please contact Cherri Womac (cherri.womac [at] alaska.gov or

  1. Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
Organisms: Biogeochemical Indicators of Environmental Change
Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Annual Meeting
    3-6 August 2010
    Buenos Aires, Argentina

Organizers of a session entitled "Organisms: biogeochemical indicators
of environmental change" announce a call for abstracts. The session will
be convened at the upcoming Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
(SCAR) annual meeting to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 3-6
August 2010. The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday, 15 April
2010.

There is extensive evidence that the earth is undergoing rapid warming.
Massive ice shelf collapses present obvious signs of warming in the
Antarctic coastal regions, but evidence on the continent is not as
dramatic. Some organisms may be sensitive to seemingly minor climate
changes and alter their abundances in ways that amplify environmental
change. Other organisms can respond to environmental changes in subtle
ways by shifting latitudinal ranges over a sustained period, for
instance.

This session aims at integrating the wealth of descriptive and
observational information regarding species distributions, ecosystem
dynamics, and the interplay between physico-chemical and biological
systems. Studies based on either current or ancient ecosystems are
sought for this session. Presenters are encouraged to project our
current understanding of Antarctic ecosystems into a future of changing
climate and to discuss potential research avenues for monitoring and
predicting ecosystem changes.

Additional information, including details on the electronic abstract
submission process, is available at:

  1. Conference Announcement
5th Sediment Budgets in Cold Environments Workshop
    19-25 September 2010
    Saudarkrokur, North Iceland

The 5th Sediment Budgets in Cold Environments (SEDIBUD) workshop will be
held in the town of Saudarkrokur, North Iceland, 19-25 September 2010 in
connection with the Natural Research Centre of Northwestern Iceland.

The theme of the workshop, built on previous SEDIBUD workshops, is
"Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Sedimentary Fluxes and Budgets
in Changing Cold Climate Environments: Field-Based Approaches and
Monitoring." The workshop will provide interesting discussions during
the two-day scientific meeting and during the extended field excursions
(three days).

Organizers request that expressions of interest from anyone who would
like to attend the workshop be sent to: armelle.sedibud [at] gmail.com. The
email should include the title of your prospective presentation.
Expressions of interest are due by Monday, 10 May 2010. Additional
details on the workshop will be provided after 10 May, based on the
number of interested persons.

Abstracts (one or two pages of text without illustration) must be
submitted electronically as a Word document. Abstracts must indicate if
you are interested in presenting a talk or a poster, and should be
emailed to: armelle.sedibud [at] gmail.com. The deadline for abstract
submission is Wednesday, 16 June 2010.

A reduced rate will be applied for a limited number of PhD students to
attend the workshop. Interested PhD students are invited to apply for
support by providing a motivation letter, a recommendation letter from
their supervisor(s), and their abstract(s) to armelle.sedibud [at] gmail.com.
The motivation letter should state the research advancement, the
relevance of the research within the SEDIBUD framework (and if the
research is performed on one or more SEDIBUD Key Test Site), and the
funding possibilities from other sources. The deadline to apply for the
reduced rate is Monday, 10 May 2010.

Key Deadlines:

Letters of interest due: Monday, 10 May 2010
Applications for reduced rate due: Monday, 10 May 2010
Abstract submissions due: Wednesday, 16 June 2010
