The deadline for abstract submission and early registration to the 3rd
European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP III) is Monday, 15 February
2010. The Conference will be convened 13-17 June 2010 in Longyearbyen,
Svalbard, Norway at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS).

The conference will focus on both arctic and alpine permafrost research,
and recent achievements like the permafrost related International Polar
Year (IPY) campaigns. A preliminary list of the planned topics is
available at: http://www.eucop2010.no/Plannedsessions.htm. The
conference will also host the official International Permafrost
Association (IPA) Executive Committee and Council meetings.

Submissions are invited to all of the planned conference topics.
Abstracts must be no more than 600 words, and received by 15 February
2010. Abstract must be sent to: abstracts [at] eucop2010.no. Further details

    40th Annual International Arctic Workshop

The deadline to register and submit an abstract to the 40th Annual
International Arctic Workshop is Wednesday, 17 February 2010. The
Workshop will be held 10-12 March 2010 at the Winter Park Mountain Lodge
in Winter Park, Colorado.

The meeting is open to all interested in the Arctic, and will consist of
a series of talks and poster sessions covering all aspects of
high-latitude environments, past and present. Previous Arctic Workshops
have included presentations on arctic and Antarctic climate, archeology,
environmental geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, soils,
ecology, oceanography, quaternary history, and more.

A special session on Thursday, 11 March will debate what roles
scientists can and should play in public understanding of science, and
discuss strategies for successfully engaging with the public both
directly and via news media. Invited participants include policy
scientist Roger A. Pielke Jr., journalism professor Tom Yulsman,
journalist Hillary Rosner, and scientist-turned-filmmaker Randy Olson.
The Workshop's keynote will be presented by Olson, author of the 2009
book "Don't be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style."

A limited number of students giving a talk or poster will receive
financial assistance, including registration and hotel support. Student
participation is subsidized by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

The Winter Park Lodge is located at the Winter Park Ski Resort, a scenic
two-hour drive from the Denver International Airport. Travel is
straightforward: Direct shuttles run between Denver International
Airport and Winter Park every hour to one and a half hours. There will
be a post-Workshop Ski Day at Winter Park on Saturday 13, March -
purchase discount ski lift tickets when you register.
