  1. Call for Papers
    11th International Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium and Early
    Career Workshop
    20-24 September 2010
    Cambridge, United Kingdom

Organizers of the 11th International Circumpolar Remote Sensing
Symposium (CRRS) announce a call for papers. The symposium will be held
21-24 September 2010 at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge,
United Kingdom. Prior to the conference (Monday, 20 September 2010),
there will be a one-day UK Polar Network (UKPN) Workshop on Circumpolar
Remote Sensing.

The conference deals specifically with remote sensing applications in
the polar environments, both arctic and Antarctic. It will provide an
international forum for the discussion of work currently being carried
out in the circumpolar regions. Topics that have been discussed at
previous CRSS meetings include environmental monitoring, the cryosphere,
resource prospecting, vegetation measurement, polar GIS applications,
and many others. The deadline for abstracts is 31 May 2010.

Prior to the conference, the UKPN Workshop is directed at graduate
students and other early career researchers. Sessions in development
include open source remote sensing and GIS, imaging climate change, and
innovating new techniques; suggestions from potential participants are
encouraged. The day will also feature a career mentoring panel and will
culminate with the CRSS Icebreaker Reception.

  1. Call for Abstracts and Registrations
    Cryospheric Change and its Influences--Cryospheric Issues in
    Regional Sustainable Development
    12-14 August 2010
    Lijiang, China

Organizers announce that an international conference entitled
'Cryospheric Change and its Influences--Cryospheric Issues in Regional
Sustainable Development' will be held in Lijiang, China 12-14 August
2010.

The aim of the conference is to promote our understanding on changes in
all components of the cryosphere and their interdependence and causes,
our current capabilities to model and assess these changes, and
mitigation and adaptability strategy for the changing global climate and
cryosphere. The conference strives to enhance and coordinate efforts in
monitoring the cryosphere, to model and understand the cryosphere's role
in the climate system, to assess changes in the cryosphere as indicators
of climate change, to quantify the frangibility of cryosphere and the
influences of cryospheric changes on hydrometeorology, society, and
economy (such as agriculture, tourism, etc.) in regional sustainable
development, to discuss adaptive countermeasures on cryospheric changes,
and to facilitate the data collection of cryospheric systems through
standardized measurements. The conference will provide an international
platform for discussions and publications of results arising from
research activities as mentioned above.

The conference will focus on the theme of cryospheric changes and
influences on the regional sustainable development. It includes the
following topics:

- Changes in snow and ice;
- Changes in permafrost and frozen ground;
- Cold region hydrology and water resources;
- Cryosphere and ecology;
- Cryosphere and Climate;
- Greenhouse gases and biogeochemical cycle in cryosphere;
- Cryospheric disasters;
- Influences of cryospheric changes on regional development;
- Frangibility of cryosphere and mitigation and adaptive counter-
measures on cryospheric changes;
- Remote sensing and data on cryosphere;
- Climate and environment records in cryosphere; and
- Late Quaternary glaciation and lake evolution.

Student travel funding applications are due by Sunday, 18 February 2010.
Abstract and registration forms are due by Wednesday, 31 March 2010.

  1. Conference Announcement
    World Climate Research Programme Open Science Conference
    Climate Research in Service to Society
    24-28 October 2011
    Denver, Colorado

Organizers announce that the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP)
Open Science Conference will be held 24-28 October 2011 in Denver,
Colorado.

The Open Science Conference will assemble the scientific community
working to advance our ability to understand and predict variability and
change of Earth's climate system on all time and space scales. It will
assess our current state of knowledge on climate variability and change,
identify the most urgent scientific issues and research challenges, and
ascertain how WCRP can best facilitate research and develop partnerships
critical for progress.

Further information will be posted on the conference website as it is
available: http://www.wcrp-climate.org/conference2011.
