  1. European Science Foundation seeks Head of European Polar Board
    Strasbourg, France

The European Science Foundation (ESF) seeks applications to the position
of Head of the European Polar Board. The position is expected to begin
in January 2010 and is based in Strasbourg, France.

The successful candidate is to support the European Polar Board's
overall mission, which is to facilitate cooperation and coordination
between directors and managers of national funded polar programs in
order to identify and prioritize issues of common European interest and
add strategic value to the efforts of national programs.

Responsibilities include:

- Overseeing the management of all projects;
- Contributing to the development of policy and its implementation;
- Participating in the impartial implementation of scientific
quality control;
- Representing the Polar Board and ESF in external meetings;
- The management and achievement of budgets of specific activities;
- Ensuring compliance with external contract obligations; and
- Managing the performance of the Polar Board team in a professional
manner and contributing to the senior management of ESF.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent research experience in
geoscience, life science, physical science, or other discipline
relevant to research in the polar regions. Ideally, candidates would
also possess:

- Experience with polar programs and organizations, and/or polar
infrastructure coordination;
- Significant involvement in European Commission Framework Programme
projects;
- In-depth knowledge of European and national research structures
and institutions, and European and international science policy;
- Experience in implementing peer review processes; and
- Experience in securing and coordinating external scientific
contracts.

  1. REMINDER: The Arctic Graduate School seeks PhD Students
    Finland

The Arctic Graduate School (ARKTIS), coordinated by the Arctic Centre at
the University of Lapland in Finland, opens a call for six full-time
research student positions for different periods between January 2010
and December 2013. The positions are intended for students with a
Master's degree (or equivalent) who will conduct their doctoral degree
at a Finnish university.

The research themes of the school are:

- Social and Environmental Impacts of Modernization and Global
Change in the Arctic; and
- Resource, Political, and Environmental Economics in Promoting the
Sustainable Social Development in the Barents Region.
