The University of Quebec in Abitibi-Temiscamingue (UQAT) and DIALOG
(research and knowledge network relating to Aboriginal peoples) will
host the 17th Inuit Studies Conference from 4-6 November 2010. The event
will be held at the UQAT First Peoples Pavilion on the Val-d'Or campus,
Quebec, Canada, under the theme "The Inuit and the Aboriginal World."

The conference proposes that the various dimensions of relations between
the Inuit (of the different northern states) and other Aboriginal
peoples of the world be explored through a variety of sub-themes: the
environment, climate change, economic development, the issues connected
to languages and cultures, and education (teacher training and academic
success). The participants will explore the current leadership and the
leadership of tomorrow. Organizers suggest developing proposals based on
one of the suggested themes, though various dimensions of Inuit
relationships with other Aboriginal peoples may also be addressed.

Proposals for papers must be sent to conference coordinators no later
than 22 January 2010. Proposals can be presented in French or in
English. A scientific committee will select the papers to be presented
at the conference. The selections will be made public in March 2010.

  1. UPDATE: Photo Exhibition - Climate Change in Our World

The opening of a two-part photo exhibit by environmental photojournalist
Gary Braasch in association with author and filmmaker Lynne Cherry has
been moved to Tuesday, 10 November 2009. It will be on display at the
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Headquarters
Atrium in Washington, D.C., through February 2010.

"Climate Change in Our World," an exhibit of large-scale color
photographs, will show climate change effects already rampant, and
illustrate some of the actions being taken toward a future of lower
emissions and new opportunities. The images are from the book "Earth
Under Fire: How Global Warming is Changing the World" by Braasch.

A companion exhibit for kids, parents, and school groups, "How We Know
About Our Changing Climate," will highlight how scientists learn about
climate change. This section of the exhibit displays images from the
book "How We Know What We Know About Our Changing Climate," by Braasch
and Cherry. The educational show will include films of kids taking
action from Cherry's project "Young Voices on Climate Change."

School groups, non-governmental organizations, and political offices are
invited to use the exhibit to aid their work in educating about climate
change, its causes, and its solutions. Hours for public viewing are
generally from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Saturday
appointments may be made by arrangement. School groups are encouraged to
