  1. Biocultural Diversity and Indigenous Ways of Knowing: Human
    Ecology in the Arctic
    By: Karim-Aly S. Kassam
    University of Calgary Press

In Biocultural Diversity and Indigenous Ways of Knowing: Human Ecology
in the Arctic, author Karim-Aly Kassam positions the Arctic and
sub-Arctic as a homeland rather than simply a frontier for resource
exploitation. Kassam aims to empirically and theoretically illustrate
the synthesis between the cultural and biological, using human ecology
as a conceptual and analytical lens. Drawing on research carried out in
partnership with indigenous northern communities, three case studies
illustrate that subsistence hunting and gathering are not relics of an
earlier era, but rather remain essential to both cultural diversity and
human survival.

The book deals with contemporary issues such as climate change,
indigenous peoples, and the impact of natural resource extraction. It is
a narrative of community-based research, in the service of the
communities for the benefit of the communities. It provides
resource-based industry, policy makers, and students with an alternative
way of looking at indigenous communities and addressing concerns of
socio-economic development and the environment.

Karim-Aly Kassam has worked with the peoples of the Arctic for over
fifteen years. His research focuses on the complex connectivity of human
and environmental relations, addressing indigenous ways of knowing,
sustainable development, and climate change. In partnership with
indigenous communities, he has conducted research in the Alaskan,
Canadian, and Russian Arctic and sub-Arctic; the Pamir Mountains in
Afghanistan and Tajikistan; and the forests in the south of India.
Kassam is International Associate Professor of Environmental and
Indigenous Studies at Cornell University.

  1. Legacies and Change in Polar Sciences: Historical, Legal and
Political Reflections on the International Polar Year
Edited By: Monica Tennberg and Jessica Shadian
    Ashgate Publishing Group

Legacies and Change in Polar Sciences: Historical, Legal and Political
Reflections on the International Polar Year presents and discusses the
challenges of polar governance. The contributors combine
interdisciplinary and multi-theoretical approaches to engage directly
with the most recent debates in international relations scholarship. The
volume includes discussions of arctic climate change, governance issues,
and reflections on the Antarctic Treaty and the science-geopolitics
interface.

The book is divided into two sections. The first discusses the role of
knowledge in arctic governance, and includes sections on traditional
knowledge and the history of the arctic research stations. The second
section of the book focuses on Antarctic governance. It includes
discussion on the challenges of new natural resources in the Antarctic
treaty system and the development of international scientific
cooperation in Antarctica.

In connection to the new book, the 20th Anniversary Book Exhibition at
the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, reflects on the challenges of
international cooperation in polar regions. Displayed in the Arctic
Centre's library until the end of 2009, the exhibition contains an
extensive collection of the Arctic Centre's research over the past 20
years. Books describing the polar regions and the effects of climate
change are also presented. For further information about the exhibition,

  1. Field Guide to Squids and Octopods of the Eastern North Pacific
    and Bering Sea
    By: Elaina M. Jorgensen
    Alaska Sea Grant

This guide is intended to assist scientists and natural science
enthusiasts in identifying squids and octopods from the eastern North
Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. These regions have been difficult to
sample due to rough seas, leaving the cephalopod fauna poorly known
until now. The book includes a key to 44 species, and is well
illustrated with line drawings, color photos, and maps. It is printed on
waterproof paper.

Author Elaina Jorgensen is a fisheries scientist at the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Alaska Fisheries Science Center.
Her work includes paralarval taxonomy and spatial ecology of
cephalopods.
