Organizers of Session C14, "Studies of Processes in Polar Snow and
Firn," announce a call for abstracts. The session will be convened at
the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, 14-18 December 2009,
in San Francisco, California.

Recently, advances in imaging and radar technology have led to increased
capabilities to monitor ice sheet changes in snow and firn, especially
in the near surface where several processes lead to rapid changes in
microstructure and chemistry. The interaction between the atmosphere and
the surface topography causes large variations in net accumulation, and
strongly influences both the physical metamorphism and chemical
stratigraphy of the resulting firn. The firn microstructure plays a key
role in the interpretation of remote sensing observations and
ground-based radar measurements. In addition, firn metamorphism and
densification have a measurable impact on surface elevation and,
consequently, altimetry-based studies of change. With the increased
capability to monitor these changes, on the microstructure scale, in
combination with measurements on the km- to basin-scale from both
on-ground field campaigns and remote sensing, the physical basis of many
processes can be better understood.

Session organizers invite abstracts involving measuring, monitoring, and
modeling of processes in near-surface snow and firn, including
chemistry, photochemistry, metamorphism, and the integration of remote
sensing observations and surface-based measurements.

The abstract submission deadline for this and all other sessions is
Thursday, 3 September 2009, at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time. To submit
an abstract, you must enter the first author's current AGU member ID and
password at: http://agu-fm09.abstractcentral.com/.
