The UK Polar Network (UKPN) announces the Cryospheric Science Workshop,
to be held 4-6 November 2009, at the University of Sheffield, in
Sheffield, UK. This third workshop in the UKPN Career Skills Workshop
series is aimed at early career scientists and researchers. It will
provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer networking and include a poster
session and a workshop dinner. The event is free for all members of the
UKPN. You do not need to be based in the UK to join the UKPN or to
participate in the workshop.

The Workshop will include talks by established researchers on their
science and career paths, group discussions on career development, and
practical hands-on sessions. The aims of the workshop are to:
- promote the sharing of ideas between early career researchers and
encourage new collaborations;
- increase the technical and scientific knowledge of the participants; and
- provide information and advice on careers in polar science.

Ideas for topics to be presented at the workshop include remote sensing
of ice, ice flow modeling, hydrology, mass balance studies, snow
science, ice core studies, field techniques, paleo-climate,
sedimentology, geomorphology and extra-terrestrial ice.

As part of the workshop, a training session in Education and Outreach is
being planned. Participants will have the chance to talk to people who
have experience with outreach activities, listen to examples of school
talks, and discuss how to communicate science to school children on all
levels.

All participants are encouraged to present a poster, and will be given
the opportunity to help in the organization of the workshop. The UKPN
also has some funds to support participants' travel and accommodation
costs.

Use the online form to register your interest and state your preferences
for sessions. The form is available at:

UKPN is a group of early career polar researchers involved in
networking, education, outreach, and career development activities. The
network was founded as part of the 2007-2009 International Polar Year
(IPY) and is the UK branch of the Association of Polar Early Career
Scientists (APECS).
