The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) seeks an Executive
Director to manage the Secretariat, oversee SCAR affairs and finances
and generate new income. As part of the International Council for
Science (ICSU), SCAR facilitates and coordinates Antarctic research and
brings key scientific issues to the attention of policy makers.

The Executive Director aids the Board of Directors (EXCOM) in developing
and implementing the vision for SCAR, and oversees the development and
implementation of all of SCAR's activities. The Secretariat is based in
the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, England. This is a
permanent full-time appointment, with a 6 months probationary period.
Salary is negotiable dependent on experience. The successful candidate
is expected to assume the post by 1 January 2010.

Candidates should have a PhD degree (or equivalent work experience) in a
scientific discipline relevant to research in Antarctica or the Southern
Ocean; an established track record as a scientist and/or as a manager of
scientific activities; extensive experience in international scientific
research and collaboration; and excellent communication and
organizational skills. The job requires a high level of computer
literacy and proficiency in English (competence in other languages is an
advantage). Previous experience with registered charities would be
useful. Applicants will be required to undertake significant overseas
travel.
