Organizers of the 39th Annual International Arctic Workshop announce a
call for abstracts. The workshop will be held 21-24 April 2009, at Bates
College, in Lewiston, Maine. The deadline for both submission of
abstracts and early registration is Wednesday, 26 March 2009.
The meeting is open to all interested in the Arctic and will consist of
a series of talks and poster sessions covering all aspects of
high-latitude environments, past and present. Previous Arctic Workshops
have included presentations on arctic and Antarctic climate, archeology,
environmental geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, soils,
ecology, oceanography, quaternary history, and more.
The Arctic Workshop has grown out of a series of informal annual
meetings sponsored by INSTAAR at the University of Colorado and other
academic institutions worldwide. In keeping with this tradition, there
are no formalized topics, and the workshop is organized around themes
developed from the abstracts submitted for presentation. However,
organizers can accommodate specific themes and arrange small group
meetings for evenings or a pre-or post workshop meeting. Please identify

A reception and registration is scheduled for Tuesday evening, 21 April
from 5pm-8pm. The main program is scheduled for Wednesday through
Friday, 22-24 April. An optional excursion to the Bowdoin College Peary
MacMillan Museum, followed by a trip to the Maine coast (Eagle Island),
may be offered on Saturday, 25 April if there is sufficient interest.
TRAVEL
Bates College is located in south-central Maine, approximately a
one-hour drive on the Maine Turnpike from the Portland, Maine Jetport
and approximately three hours from Boston's Logan International. Rental
cars are available in both airports. The organizers will coordinate van
shuttles from Portland for workshop participants arriving in certain
time blocks on Monday, 21 April and departing at the end of the
workshop.
SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
Student participation is a vital component of this workshop. A limited
number of students giving a talk or poster will receive financial
assistance, including registration and hotel support. Support for
student participation is subsidized by the U.S. National Science
Foundation.
