The Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences (IGES) at Aberystwyth
University, on the coast of Wales, announces a fully-funded PhD
studentship: Numerical Modeling of Himalayan Glacial Lake Outburst
Floods. The project will be supervised by Aberystwyth University
faculty: Neil Glasser, James Brasington, and Mike Hambrey and John
Reynolds, of Reynolds Geo-Sciences Limited.
The project would be most suited to a student with a quantitative
training and who has experience with the use of computers for the
analysis of spatial data sets and numerical modeling. Numeracy and
computer literacy are essential skills for this project. Desirable
skills include knowledge of flood modeling and computer programming, as
well as relevant fieldwork experience.
IGES seeks applications from people with a background in a quantitative
science (e.g., natural sciences, geology, geophysics, engineering
geology or hydrogeology) with an interest in applying their expertise to
glaciological research. The post offers the opportunity to work in an
important and exciting area of glaciology, as well as the opportunity to
collaborate with, and spend time at, Reynolds Geo-Sciences, in Mold.
There will also be opportunities to undertake fieldwork in the Himalaya,
obtaining model input parameters, investigating modes of moraine-dam
failure, and undertaking field verification of the numerical modeling
results.
The deadline for applications is Wednesday, 11 March 2009. Interviews
are expected to be held beginning the week of 23 March 2009.
