The International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) announces a summer school program,
"Global-to-Local Interactions: Social-Ecological Resilience in a Rapidly
Changing North." The course will be offered 7-19 July 2009 at the
University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Course Objectives:
- Explore issues of rapid change, resilience, and sustainability in the
context of Alaska's interior and arctic regions through the
interdisciplinary lens of social-ecological systems.
- Learn firsthand about efforts of arctic science through interaction
with researchers working in the north;
- Interact with local residents of an Alaskan village to discuss the
implications of change to rural livelihoods.
- Build a network of young scholars who share an interest in high
latitudes sustainability.
The course is open to graduate students currently enrolled in PhD and
masters programs. U.S. citizens and international students are
encouraged to apply. Applications will be evaluated based the
applicants' interest in issues of global change, northern
sustainability, social-ecological interactions, and interdisciplinary
training. Experience doing research in high latitudes is preferred but
not required. Fieldwork in remote areas, hikes off the trail, and
camping are part of the program.

no later than Sunday, 1 March 2009:
- A two-page essay describing your current thesis research, your
interest in the course topic, how your participation will contribute to
your training and education;
- Two letters of reference, with one from your thesis advisor;
- A copy of your CV;
- One example that illustrates your work as a young scholar (optional).
