The European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL)
announces a workshop and call for abstracts, "Remote Sensing of the
Coastal Zone - Coasts and Climate Conflicts," to be held 18-20 June
2009, at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, on the island
of Crete, Greece. The abstract submission deadline is Monday, 16
February 2009.

Coastal zones are important environmental and economic resources. As a
complex interface between land and oceans, its investigation from space,
or using airborne sensors has always been a challenge. This workshop
will focus on the impact of climate change on coastal zones and inland
waters, on climate change and its expected effects on European seas, and
on the role of remote sensing for its study.

Topics will include:
- Changing terrestrial run-off into coastal waters;
- Escalation of extreme events: floods, storms, and high tides;
- Hydrology and water budget evolution of rivers and lakes;
- Increasing temperatures in inland and coastal waters;
- Impact of varying physical forcing on ecosystems and morphodynamics;
- New developments of habitats, biodiversity, and alien invaders;
- Fluxes and fate of seawater constituents including pollutants; and
- The role of Coastal Zone Management in adapting to climate change.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday, 16 February 2009.
The deadline for early registration is Friday, 1 May 2009. After this
date, those wishing to participate may pay a higher registration fee.

Registration for workshop attendance, abstract submission, and payment
of the registration fee is done with EARSeL's Conference Management
System CMS at: http://www.conferences.earsel.org/.
