Session Announcement and Call for Abstracts
"Joint Session on Polar Regional Weather and Climate Modeling (and
Global Relevancy)"
MOCA Joint Symposium '09
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
19-24 July 2009

The International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences
(IAMAS), the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the
Oceans (IAPSO), and the International Association for the Cryospheric
Sciences (IACS) invite submissions to session J02, "Polar Regional
Weather and Climate Modeling (and Global Relevancy)," to be held at the
MOCA Joint Assembly, 19-24 July 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
(http://www.moca-09.org). The abstract submission deadline is Friday, 23
January 2009.

This session invites both numerical and observationally based contributions:
1. Enhancing understanding of the physical processes regulating
variability of environmental conditions (atmosphere, cryosphere, and
ocean) in the polar regions;
2. Assessing models performance and their uncertainties using results of
the Model Intercomparison Projects (MIPs);
3. Developing new models and analytical approaches allowing more
accurate reproduction of interaction in the system atmosphere-ice-ocean
or identifying teleconnections showing the role of the polar regions in
the global processes and vice-versa; and
4. Improving parameterizations of the specific processes in the
atmosphere, ice, or ocean.

Discussions associated with data assimilation and
reconstructions/reanalysis of the climatic systems for the Arctic and
Antarctic are welcomed as well.

The session is being convened by: Annette Rinke, Andrey Proshutinsky,
David Holland, and John Cassano. The abstract submission deadline for
this and all other sessions is Friday, 23 January 2009.
