The Department of Wildlife Management (DWM) of the North Slope Borough,
Alaska, is seeking a Wildlife Biologist to design and carry out wildlife
research on important subsistence species of northern Alaska. This
position will focus on the management of marine and terrestrial species
that are most heavily harvested and may be affected by oil and gas
exploration and development. Such species include the bowhead whale,
walrus, polar bear, caribou, waterfowl, and fish. The applicant will
also be expected to participate in ongoing studies in collaboration with
Federal, State, University, and DWM scientists. The successful applicant
will also be responsible for reviewing Environmental Impact Statements
and other technical documents that require biological expertise.
Applicants should have:
1) A strong background in wildlife management and/or vertebrate zoology
or related field, 2) Field experience in remote locations,
3) Experience working with Native peoples and issues,
4) Experience working with federal, state, and local governments and/or
tribal entities, and 5) Enthusiasm for living in a rural community
(Barrow).
Previous experience with polar biological research is preferred. Salary
range is $65-80k, dependent upon experience.
The North Slope Borough (NSB) is a county-like municipality that
occupies the northern sixth of the State of Alaska. Within this area
(88,000 square miles), and in adjacent waters of the Arctic Ocean, are
vast wildlife resources (caribou, fish, waterfowl, whales, walrus,
seals, polar bears, etc.). On Alaska's North Slope are North America's
two largest oilfields and approximately 7,000 full-time residents. Most
of the residents are Inupiat Eskimo whose subsistence lifestyle is
heavily dependent upon the wildlife resources.
