Dear Colleagues,

During the past year and half, a group of approximately one hundred
arctic researchers have contributed to a science plan for the
development of an Arctic System Model (ASM). The purpose of the science
plan is to suggest to U.S. funding agencies a path for developing the
capability to simulate the arctic system with unprecedented spatial
resolution, including biogeochemical, ecosystem, and human dimension
components. The resultant draft science plan suggests the concurrent use
of regional and global arctic-centric models to aid development of new
science and methods, consolidated in a Community Arctic System Model,
with the aid of model-and-observations to seed development of processes
not currently simulated in mainstream models.

In discussions, the Steering Committee realized there is a fine line
between over-specification of the activity and vague ideas that do
little to provide a way forward; the draft report seeks to strike a
balance.

The science plan has evolved through widespread community consultation,
including two Arctic System Modeling workshops in the USA. The ASM Plan
Steering Committee now wishes to solicit community-wide review of the
plan. It can be downloaded at:

The Committee wants this document to be as useful and powerful as
possible. Suggested changes or additions to the science plan are
welcome.
