The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of
Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a tenure-track,
full-time, Assistant Professor in Geological Oceanography, with a
primary interest in sediment dynamics. The position is based in
Fairbanks, Alaska. Review of applications will begin Monday, 5 January
2009.

Alaska's marine regions and ecosystems offer phenomenal opportunities
for research. The applicant should be interested in collaborative,
interdisciplinary marine research with a regional focus in the northern
North Pacific, Bering Sea, and/or Arctic Ocean regions.

Applications are encouraged from creative individuals with strong
scientific and academic expertise who will complement the existing
faculty at SFOS. The successful candidate will be expected to build an
externally-funded, field-oriented research program. Candidates should be
enthusiastic about teaching, and will be expected to teach core and
specialty oceanography courses and to mentor graduate students. SFOS
faculty are expected to provide public service to the nation, state, and
local communities by serving on advisory committees and participating in
other university and community activities.

UAF is Alaska's research university. Campus facilities provide
state-of-the-art instrumentation in support of research (e.g., Alaska
Stable Isotope Facility, http://www.uaf.edu/water/ASIF; and Advanced
Instrumentation Lab, http://www.uaf.edu/ail; Core Facility for Nucleic
Acid Analysis, http://www.core.uaf.edu). SFOS expects to begin operating
the new Alaska Region Research Vessel (http://www.sfos.uaf.edu/arrv/) in
2011. SFOS has over 60 faculty at various locations across Alaska and
over 125 graduate students engaged in thesis research in Alaska waters
and throughout the world (http://www.sfos.uaf.edu). This hire is part of
an ongoing initiative to strengthen the fisheries and marine science
programs in Fairbanks. The department added seven new faculty in 2008
and expects to add several additional faculty in the coming years.

Qualified applicants must possess a PhD in geological oceanography, or
related field, from an accredited university by the time of hire; s/he
must be proficient in English, have university-level teaching ability,
and have a strong research and publication record appropriate to his/her
experience and date of degree. Additional information about the position
