The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) seeks a candidate for the position of
Program Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for
coordinating and implementing activities to achieve WWF's objectives of
eliminating immediate threats to vulnerable and valuable arctic areas,
species and resources. The work will be undertaken in close association
with other WWF arctic national organizations, and will focus on fishing,
shipping, and oil and gas development. The position is based in Oslo.

The WWF International Arctic Programme leads WWF's work in the Arctic.
It is also the 'core team' designing and implementing the major Network
Initiative (NI) "Creating a New Future for the Arctic." The NI aims to
eliminate threats to the Arctic as a key region for the global climate
system and as one of the world's largest, most valuable and pristine
natural regions, through reducing global greenhouse emissions to avoid
an Arctic Meltdown and by creating resilience-based management of land,
sea, ecosystems and species.

The Immediate Threat reduction objectives of the Arctic Programme are
critical to achieve these goals.

The major duties and responsibilities of the position are:
- Working with the Arctic NI Oil and Gas Strategy Leader, to develop
and implement strategies within the Arctic Network Initiative to
secure a ban on further oil exploitation from the Arctic, and the
implementation of ecologically sensitive 'no go' areas for all oil
and gas activities. To progress the implementation of a moratorium
on new oil and gas activities in the Arctic until the "oil spill
response gap" is closed. This will constitute up to 30% of the work
undertaken.
- To develop and implement strategies within the Arctic Network
Initiative to eliminate IUU fishing as a threat to arctic fish
stocks, and to ensure all arctic fishery resources are healthy and
harvested to ICES standards and meet MSC criteria.
- To develop and implement strategies within the Arctic Network
Initiative to ensure that all impacts from shipping that negatively
affect arctic ecosystems are eliminated.
- To act as the key liaison point and to coordinate Arctic
"immediate threats" work between WWF national organizations working
on Arctic issues.
- To maintain a strategic overview of the opportunities for and
threats to the Arctic at international, national and regional
levels; and keep abreast of new trends and emerging opportunities
for WWF.
- To build capacity to achieve WWF's Arctic governance objectives by
creating strategic alliances with other international, national and
regional conservation groups, industry and government.
- To work with the communications team to help prepare relevant
communication materials.
- Provide support for Arctic-specific fundraising strategies and
events.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Master's degree or PhD in a relevant discipline;
- Have at least 3 years of post-graduate work experience in a
position directly relating to arctic or Antarctic conservation or
advocacy;
- Advanced knowledge of arctic oil and gas operations, fishing and
shipping industries in the Arctic;
- Proven ability to deliver on agreed objectives;
- An excellent understanding of the political and social
considerations operating in each arctic country, and the region as a
whole;
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop positive
relationships with all stakeholders involved in arctic governance;
- Capacity and willingness to travel and to be able to work in
arctic regions when required;
- Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically;
- A broad understanding of arctic issues, particularly the
ecological context and including climate change;
- Demonstrated ability to act as a media spokesperson;
- Excellent leadership, motivational and interpersonal skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and
- Must adhere to WWF's values, which are: Passionate and Optimistic,
Challenging and Inspiring, Credible and Accountable, Persevering and
Delivering Results.

Applicants are asked to submit their CV and a cover letter in English.
Applications should be submitted, preferably by email to jobs [at] wwf.no,
with the subject header "Arctic Immediate Threats," before Sunday, 21
September 2008.
