A new report from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) is now
available: "Handbook for Community-Based Sea Ice Monitoring." This
report will be of interest to any arctic community, organization, or
researcher wishing to establish a local sea ice monitoring program.
Originally compiled for the Siku-Inuit-Hila Project, a collaborative
project that brings Inuit and scientists together to study sea ice
knowledge, use, and changes in Greenland, Canada, and Alaska, the
handbook has been improved with feedback from local observers and is now
available for broad use.

Complete with detailed diagrams and photographs, the plain language
handbook goes through all the steps necessary for assembling and
constructing equipment, installing sea ice monitoring stations, and
collecting data. Spreadsheets for basic analyses and visualization of
the data are also provided. The methods and equipment described in the
handbook are designed to be robust and simple to build and repair in
remote locations, but at the same time allow communities to acquire high
quality data.

Sea ice monitoring and local contributions to international sea ice
observations have been a growing interest in recent years. The NSIDC
hopes this handbook will help communities and researchers launch their
own monitoring programs or enhance existing sea ice studies.
