The deadline for the "Marine Microbial Ecology in the Arctic: Theory,
Facts, and Modeling" course has been extended to Friday, 16 May 2008.

The University Centre of Svalbard (UNIS) Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway,
will offer this PhD course, to be held 21-30 July 2008. The course, will
give first-hand understanding of the theoretical framework for the
microbial loop, with special emphasis on empirical observations from
Greenland and Svalbard waters. Novel topics, approaches and research
areas, such as microbial respiration, molecular and genomic techniques,
will be presented and discussed. Data from recent fieldwork in the
Arctic will be applied in exercises in marine food web modeling. Student
work groups will discuss important questions related to the importance
of arctic microbial processes in an era of climate change, with guidance
from international pioneers in this field of research.

The course will be held at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS)
located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. The institution provides housing
facilities for students in Nybyen, where each student will be offered a
