EuroBABEL: Better Analyses Based on Endangered Languages

The European Science Foundation (ESF) announces a call for outline
proposals to the EUROCORES program, EuroBABEL: Better Analyses Based on
Endangered Languages. The goal of EuroBABEL is to promote empirical
research on underrepresented, endangered languages, that aims at
changing and refining our ideas about linguistic structure, and about
language in relation to cognition, social and cultural organization, and
related issues in a trans-/multi-disciplinary perspective.
The EuroBABEL program aims to support high quality multidisciplinary
research and is expected to run for 3-4 years. It includes national
research funding as well as support for networking and dissemination
activities managed by the ESF. The proposal opportunity is to cover a
number of projects that will work on primary data, both newly collected
and archival material, in order to concentrate on the analysis and the
use of the results to expand and correct insights into the structure and
nature of human language.
Proposals must involve a minimum of 3 eligible Principal Investigators
from 3 different countries participating in the program ("three nation
requirement"). Scientists or groups not seeking funding or not eligible
to apply for funding from one of the participating funding agencies, can
be associated with a proposal by contributing additional scientific
value to the collaborative research project. Their contribution must be
fully self-supportive. In the context of eligibility, Associated
Partners do not count towards the "three nation requirement". Specific

Outline Proposals are to be submitted by Tuesday, 20 May 2008, 12:00 PM
CET. It is expected that Full Proposals will be invited by 30 June 2008,
with Tuesday, 16 September 2008, 12:00 PM CET as the expected deadline
for submission.
