The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) is hosting a
free, one-day professional development workshop prior to the joint
SCAR/IASC IPY Open Science Conference on Monday, 7 July 2008, in St.
Petersburg, Russia. The workshop is an international and
multidisciplinary event aimed at early career researchers addressing key
issues such as grant proposal writing, research productivity,
communication, and international collaboration, with sessions run by
leading polar researchers.

Confirmed sessions include:
- Research Productivity (Robin Bell, Columbia University)
- Great grant proposals (Elena Sparrow, University of Alaska)
- Communicating your polar research (Dave Carlson, Director IPY IPO)
- Balancing Education and Outreach (Jose Xavier, University of the
Algarve)
- Antarctic and Arctic Research Partnership Opportunities (Colin
Summerhayes, SCAR Executive Director, and Volker Rachold, IASC Executive
Secretary)
- Finding your perfect polar job (Jenny Baeseman, ARCUS)
- SCAR fellowships (Narelle Baker, Scott Polar Research Institute)

Additional mentors participating in the Q&A panel discussion include
Alan Rodger and Nick Owens (British Antarctic Survey), Victoria Lytle
(CReSIS), and Terry Wilson (Ohio State University).

PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty (or
equivalent) conducting polar research during IPY (although not
necessarily as part of an endorsed IPY project) from all disciplines are
encouraged to apply.

On-site expenses are covered by APECS (supported by SCAR and IGS). A
limited number of travel grants are available to support those without
funding; please specify on the application form.
