The Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC)
announces a student position for an Assistant Arctic Research Officer
for a period of eight to ten weeks during the summer of 2008. CANDAC is
an organization of university researchers and government scientists
studying how the atmosphere is changing over Canada. The major part of
its operation is focused on the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research
Laboratory (PEARL) located at Eureka, Nunavut, on Ellesmere Island.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn about the
atmosphere and the measurements that are made by CANDAC for atmospheric
research. The student will be responsible for assisting with the
installation, maintenance, and monitoring of remote sounding instruments
at PEARL. S/he will also have the opportunity to work on similar tasks
in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto, or in the
Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University in
Halifax, Nova Scotia. Training will be provided for working at Eureka,
as well as working with the specific instrumentation. This is a paid
position with stipend provided by the University of Toronto.

CANDAC is looking for a candidate who is a quick learner, is personable
and outgoing, is comfortable using basic tools, has good oral
communications skills, and has a working knowledge of computers
including the use of spreadsheet and word processing software. The
candidate should be comfortable occasionally working alone and
unsupervised for a few hours at a time.

Candidates for this position must be able to live and work with a small
group of people in an isolated environment for a period of four to six
weeks. Due to the nature of the position, some of the required tasks
will be moderately physically demanding and others will require fine
motor skills. It is necessary that candidates are physically capable of
completing such tasks. Because this position is made possible through an
International Polar Year project, priority will be given applicants from
northern Canada (Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavik
[northern Quebec], and Nunatsiavut [northern Labrador]).

Interested candidates should apply by completing an application form
(available at the Education/Outreach section of the CANDAC website at:
http://www.candac.ca) and sending it to:
Kaley Walker
Department of Physics
University of Toronto
Toronto, Ontario
CANADA, M5S 1A7
Fax: 416-978-8905
E-mail: kwalker [at] atmosp.physics.utoronto.ca

The deadline for applications is Friday, 1 February 2008. If being sent
by mail, applications must be postmarked by this date.

Consideration of applications will begin after this date and the
appointment will be made so that the candidate can start in June 2008.
All universities involved in CANDAC are committed to Employment Equity.
Applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal
persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups,
and others who may contribute to further diversification of ideas are
encouraged. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
