Papers are invited for "Polar Hydrology - Subsurface Flow Systems"
(session HS9.8) to be convened at the European Geophysical Union General
Assembly on 13-18 April 2008, in Vienna, Austria.
Session description:
The polar subsurface water flow is mainly linked to the following
systems:
- Groundwater flow in the active layer
- Inter- and sub-permafrost groundwater flow
- Englacial and subglacial water flow
Polar subsurface water is probably one of the least accessible
hydrological elements on the Earth. Its flow pattern is controlled by
the thickness of the active layer and of the underlying permafrost as
well as by the size and thermal regime of the glaciers. Therefore, these
flow systems are in a particular way sensitive to global change.
Similar flow systems influenced the behavior of ice sheets during the
ice ages and often impacted the formation of glaciogenic sediments and
landforms.
Session organizers invite scientists working in modern and past polar
environments to contribute papers related to the topics above. Both
academic and practical aspects are welcome. Papers linked to global
change aspects of polar hydrology are particularly acknowledged.
