The Arctic Centre at University of Groningen announces a four-year PhD
student position on the IPY project "Large Scale Historical Exploitation
of Polar Areas" (LASHIPA), an international research program in both the
Arctic and Antarctic involving scholars from the Netherlands, Sweden,
USA, Norway, Russia, and the UK.

The PhD position is explicitly for non-Dutch students and is based at
the University of Groningen. The successful applicant will be based at
the Arctic Centre, but will spend time working in the other partner
countries on documentary sources and in Spitsbergen on fieldwork with a
multinational and multidisciplinary team. The grant covers living
expenses for four years, including facilities at the Arctic Centre, as
well as expedition, travel, and research costs.

Applicants will be expected to have a Masters degree in archaeology and
