Papers are invited for Session A17: "Atmospheric Compositional Changes
Recorded in Firn Air: Histories and Mechanisms" being convened at the
American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting on 10-14 December 2007 in
San Francisco, California.

Session Description:
Air extracted from firn (the unconsolidated snowpack atop glaciers and
ice sheets) has proved to be a rich source of information about the
composition of the atmosphere in the recent past. It is also an
important link between the composition of the atmosphere and the bubbles
in the underlying ice. Various physical and chemical processes influence
the makeup of firn air and must be taken into account when
reconstructing the composition of the atmosphere, both from firn air and
from ice bubbles.

This session seeks contributions from field, laboratory, and modeling
studies that use firn air to reconstruct atmospheric history or that aim
to better understand the mechanisms altering the composition of air
within the firn. Examples include firn-based records of previously
unmeasured gas species, new records with unprecedented resolution or
length, studies of fractionation processes occurring at bubble
close-off, and/or novel modeling approaches for both forward and inverse
problems.
