The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the Cooperative
Institute for Research in the Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the
University of Colorado at Boulder has an immediate opening for a
Scientific Programmer with skills in computer programming and data
analysis.

Tasks include conferring with scientists to determine solutions to data
analysis and data processing problems; translating research algorithms
into working programs; quality assurance and documentation; assembling
data from multiple sources and integrating and analyzing the data;
making data plots, maps, and images for posters, presentations, and
publications, and presenting the data.

Requirements for this position are a Bachelors degree, preferably in
atmospheric sciences, math, physics, or another physical science;
well-developed problem-solving skills; knowledge of software engineering
practices and software development life-cycle; ability to design, write,
test, and debug high-quality software; excellent written and oral
communication skills; ability to communicate with scientists and data
users; and curiosity regarding the cryosphere and the roles it plays in
the Earth system.

Desirable qualifications include expertise in climate processes,
meteorology, numerical modeling, multivariate numerical methods, and/or
data assimilation techniques; experience working with large data sets;
experience working with remote sensing data sets; basic understanding of
statistical methods; and proficiency in multiple programming languages
such as C, IDL or FORTRAN.
