The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Visiting
Scientist Programs in cooperation with the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
Laboratory (GFDL) and Princeton University are committed to
understanding and predicting the future behavior of land-based ice
sheets in response to increasing greenhouse gases, especially with
respect to their impact on future sea level rise and climate. As part of
this commitment, GFDL and Princeton University seek to recruit a
scientist with a keen interest in this topic and are open to a wide
range of potential candidates, from junior to well established
scientists, with a good publication record. The successful candidate
needs to have a strong background in numerical modeling of the climate
system, and experience in land-ice modeling is highly desirable but not
essential.
The successful candidate will initiate a program to develop and/or
incorporate a state of the art land-ice model into GFDL/Princeton Earth
System Model and use the fully coupled Earth System Model for studies of
the future behavior of land-based ice sheets and their impact on sea
level and climate. This research and development activity will involve
strong interactions with scientists at both GFDL and Princeton
University, particularly those in the Cooperative Institute for Climate
Science (CICS), a joint multi-disciplinary research institute connecting
GFDL and Princeton University. Although the initial appointment will be
for two years, it is anticipated that for a successful candidate this
appointment would evolve into a long-term position.
The scientist appointed to this position will be an employee of UCAR and
subject to and covered by UCAR policies with respect to all personnel
matters. The appointment carries a fixed annual salary. UCAR benefits

holidays, mandatory participation in a retirement fund (TIAA/CREF), and
