World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, is one of the
principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide
awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and
action. The conference in Washington is part of the international
celebrations of World Environment Day taking place in Tromso, Norway on
4-5 June 2007. In support of the International Polar Year 2007-2008, the
theme of "Melting Ice - A Hot Topic?" will provide an opportunity to
attract international attention to the effects that climate change is
having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the ensuing consequences
around the world.
