The International Polar Heritage Committee (IPHC) announces "IPY:
Protection and Preservation of Scientific Bases in the Polar Regions,"
an International Polar Year conference being held on 24-27 September
2007, at the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium in Barrow, Alaska.

Since the first IPY in 1882-83 there have been a number of major
international science initiatives in polar regions. All of these events
have been milestones in the history of humankind and the tangible
evidence of many of these sites remains scattered around the frozen
extremes of our planet. The current IPY 2007-2008 is an internationally
coordinated campaign that will initiate a new era in polar science and
also include the social sciences. IPY embraces research in both the
Arctic and Antarctic and recognizes the strong links these areas have
with the rest of the globe.

Presentations at the IPHC conference will focus on many locations
ranging from the historic huts of Antarctica to the remains of recent
scientific and exploratory bases in the Arctic and will include some of
the earlier IPY stations. Topics to be discussed include management
issues, conservation techniques, accessibility, and the recording and
dissemination of data and information. It is intended that IPHC will
subsequently publish selected presentations in book form to make them
available for wider distribution to the polar heritage protection
community.

The main purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for those
involved in the conservation of cultural heritage sites in polar regions
and to share their experience and knowledge. The emphasis of
presentations should be on conservation issues and not merely represent
a historical lecture.
