Papers are invited for the session "Alpine and Arctic Biodiversity and
Ecology" at the 37th Annual Conference of the Ecological Society of
Germany, Switzerland and Austria being held 10-14 September 2007 in
Marburg, Germany.

Session description:
Many arctic and alpine environments are extreme. Moreover, alpine
habitats are characterized by steep altitudinal gradients, extreme
patchiness, strong natural fragmentation, and spatially isolated
populations. This has led to high degrees of specialization and
differentiation. In addition to the wilderness still characterizing many
alpine areas, the Alps and other mountain ranges also constitute
cultural landscapes shaped by agricultural and other land uses. While
the specific natural characteristics of arctic and alpine habitats are
widely acknowledged, their consequences for ecological and evolutionary
processes and for the resulting biodiversity are still poorly
understood. Understanding the functioning of arctic and alpine
ecosystems is also crucial to assess consequences of climate change
given that warming has been more pronounced at high latitudes and
altitudes than in most other regions of the world. This symposium
welcomes contributions on all aspects of arctic and alpine ecology,
including population and evolutionary ecology, phylogeography, and
community ecology.
