The Nasivvik Centre for Inuit Health and Changing Environments invites
applications from undergraduate students for the 2007 Summer Student
Research Awards.

The Nasivvik Centre is a multidisciplinary research and training center
funded by the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples Health (IAPH), one of
thirteen institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR). The center is focused on building capacity in Inuit health
research through trainee support and promoting research in specific
areas of Inuit environmental health, including:
- contaminants, diet, nutrition, and the environment;
- healthy homes, e.g., air and water quality;
- climate change and Inuit health;
- northern environmental health surveillance and monitoring; and
- Inuit and scientific knowledge for environmental health research,
e.g., traditional medicines and research methods for knowledge
incorporation.

As part of its mandate to support student research and training, the
Nasivvik Centre will provide funding for undergraduate students to gain
experience by participating in research projects during the summer
months (June-August) that focus on issues related to one or more of the
above themes. Objectives of the research awards include:
- to stimulate interest in research on key Inuit environmental health
topics of importance to communities and organizations;
- to provide support to students for training and research in Inuit
environmental health; and
- to support the development of highly qualified researchers with
knowledge and experience in Inuit environment and health issues.

The program is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of
Canada at the time of application. Applicants must be undergraduate
students working on an established research project who will be
returning to a recognized university or college program in Fall 2007.
Funding support shall be at the CIHR established level of $1,313 CDN per
month for three months with a maximum award of $3,939 CDN.

Applications should include a two-page description of the research
project and copy of the full research proposal (if project has already
received funding from a recognized granting council), a half-page
description of the role to be played by the undergraduate student in the
project, list and amount of other sources of funding for the research
project, location of work, and name and contact information of the
researcher and the undergraduate student. The application should be
submitted by the researcher who is supervising/hiring the student no
later than Friday, 27 April 2007, to:
Susie Bernier, Executive Director
Nasivvik Centre
Edifice Delta 2, Bureau 600
2875, boulevard Laurier, 6e etage
Sainte-Foy, Quebec G1V 2M2
Canada

Upon completion of the summer work, students will be expected to submit
a three-page report to the Nasivvik Centre by 28 September 2007 (format
to be provided). Supervisors are requested to assist students in
identifying outcomes of their summer research experience.
