The Committee on Scientific Accomplishments of Earth Observations from
Space, under The National Academies' Board of Atmospheric Sciences and
Climate, is requesting input from the Earth science community on a study
that will document how satellite observations have uniquely contributed
to scientific understanding of the atmosphere, ocean, land, biosphere,
and cryosphere. The development and use of satellites has provided a
truly unique vantage point for studying Earth and allows an integrated
Earth system science perspective that was not possible before.
The committee would like members of the Earth science community to
provide examples of important scientific accomplishments resulting from
the nation's research and development of space-based Earth observational
capabilities by responding to these points:
- What are the major scientific accomplishments of Earth observations
from space?
- How did satellite observations contribute to each accomplishment?
- Why is each accomplishment significant?
- Please provide references to key papers related to these
accomplishments.
- Please provide your name, title, affiliation, phone number, and email
address.
