A two-week summer school on Environmental Studies in the Boreal Forest
Zone will be held on 14-28 July 2007, at the Central Forest Biospheric
Reserve in Fedorovskoe, Tver Region, Russia. Organized by the
International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at University of Alaska
Fairbanks (UAF), the summer school is open to graduate students and
postdoctoral scientists with a demonstrated interest in ecosystem
modeling. Advanced undergraduates with experience in ecosystem modeling
may also apply. This summer course replaces the earlier announced arctic
system modeling course at UAF (1-14 July 2007), which has been
cancelled.

The course will consist of lectures on contemporary climate change,
paleoclimatology, hydrology, remote sensing of environment, and
climatic, biospheric, and hydrologic modeling. The field work is related
to studies of the land-atmosphere interactions in the boreal forest
zone. Each student will work on a project as a member of a small team
together with an instructor and will present a project report at the end
of the two-week period. Several field trips inside and outside the
Central Forest Biospheric Reserve are planned to highlight various
aspects of studies in ecosystem modeling.

Applicants should submit a short CV that includes a list of relevant
coursework, a one-page statement of interest, and a letter of
recommendation from a research supervisor to Kathy Glodowski
(katcam [at] iarc.uaf.edu). Applicants will be selected on the basis of their
experience with, interest in, and commitment to arctic modeling. The
deadline for applications is Friday, 9 February 2007, and applicants
will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by Thursday, 1
March 2007. IARC will provide financial support for the successful
applicants in the form of economy-class round-trip airfare, visa
support, ground transportation in Russia, two weeks of lodging, and a
meal allowance.
